A Risk to the Wild Salmons

Many people now farmed salmons. The global harvest is at 110 million tons and still growing. But a disease is inflecting the farmed Atlantic salmons. This virus can spread to other salmons in the open Atlantic Ocean. This disease is called Heart and Skeletal muscle inflammation or HSMI. This disease destroys the heart and muscle tissues of the inflected fish. Researchers found that this disease may be caused by an unknown virus. The newly identify virus is related is a virus known as reoviruses. They also find out that the rate of HSMI in the farm is higher than the rate in the wild. More research is needed to confirm that reoviruses are a cause of HSMI.
This is related to biology by that it tells us about diseases and virus. A virus needs a host and it doesn’t have a nucleus. Also this talks about life and biology is the study of life. Salmons are an animal and we farm salmons for food. It is very important to not kill too much of the salmons because they might go endanger if we do.
This article is important because we have to identify the problem and solve it before it gets to the wild salmons. If this disease gets to the wild salmons, the salmon population might decline by a lot. We also need to care because it also affects our food source. If we do not find a cure to this disease, we might not have salmons to eat or the price of salmons will rise. Also the wild salmons are affected by this. Leaving this disease untreated will eventually cause all the salmons to die.
