Researchers have made a new discovery on the embryos of salamanders. The embryo of the salamander is an emerald green color and not till recently scientists are actually able to explain why they are that color. Scientist Ryan Kerney of Dalhouise University in Halifax, has found single celled alga living inside the cell of the salamander. This is such a big discovery because scientist never knew that algae actually lived in the cell with the salamander. They always thought that the algae lived outside the cell helping the salamander embryo retrieve more oxygen, through a symbiotic relationship.
This relates to science and biology because it shows how salamanders actually live together in an ecosystem. It opens the door to understanding how symbiotic relationships between two different organisms actually work. It also allows researchers to understand the relationship between other species of salamander and algae.
This discovery is important because it shows how the relationship between salamanders and algae actually happen, which can lead to new discoveries in the future.
