Face Transplant Recipient: 'Just Another Person'

Connie Culp is the recipient of thirty plastic surgeries through the course of 2 ½ years. She is the first person to receive a face transplant and she now sees herself as “just another person on the street”. In 2004, her husband shot her in the face and her transplant began in 2008. Out of the 14 other people in the world, she says that she is lucky. Maria Sienionow, the surgeon who led the surgery says that the nerves have grown back in Culp’s face and is restoring function.

This relates to science and biology through the anatomy of the body. We would think that after having one’s face blown away, that we would die but miraculously Culp’s body reacted differently and with the help of surgeries, she is up and running. Everyone’s body reacts differently to situations and in Culp’s case; her body reacted the right way.

We should care about this because in the future, other people may have to undergo these transplants and we have to see the side effects of the surgery since not many have had it. This surgery may one day become very popular and it must be perfected so it is available to everyone.
