Many people, especially youth, are starting to follow the new trend and get tattoos. Tattoos can be cute and fun, but they can also harm the body. I guess the saying “Beauty is pain” is true. In recent studies, scientists have learned that the more tattoos a person has, the higher risk there is of catching diseases such as hepatitis C. Hepatitis C is a disease that leads to the swelling of the liver. Scientists have analyzed and studied people from 30 countries which included the United States and Canada. Furthermore, they concluded that about 36% of people in the U.S. fewer than 30 have tattoos. I think that this number is not that surprising given the fact every time I walk on the street, someone under the age of thirty has a tattoo. People take their body parts for granted by getting “tatted” anywhere without thinking about the kind of negative affect it can have on your body. Not only is tattooing popular in the U.S., but researchers also noticed that many Canadians do the same thing. Ina recent study, about 21% percent of teenagers in Canada want a tattoo. According to the article, “Tattooing linked to higher risk of hepatitis C: UBC study” by The University of British Columbia, “the skin is punctured 80 to 150 times a second in order to inject color pigments.” Basically, this source is trying to inform people about the dangers of getting tattoos and what it’s actually doing to your skin.
This article relates to science because it includes concepts such as disease, infections, and color pigments. Disease and infection has to do mainly with biology, whereas color pigments deals mostly with plants in some ways. The reason this article was in science news is because scientists wanted to research something as simple as tattoos and turn it into a major health problem. One effect that can cause a health problem is if a tattoo artist uses the same instrument on more than one person without sterilizing it first. The reason for sterilization is because the ink comes in contact with blood, which has a lot to do with medical science. Another cause would be that if the tattoo dyes are not kept in a container, then it can carry some diseases. This is a major issue, especially in science. The article also include risks of getting tattoos such as HIV, bacterial infections, and hepatitis B. Therefore, tattoo art plays a major role in the science industry.
I think that this article is definitely something that people should know since it is a new “trend” in society. This article would be more relevant to the youth so they could become aware of the effects before they decide to get a tattoo. I personally liked this article because it was science related, but also in a fun way.
