Tai chi practice, could offer an effective method to cope with the chronic pain of fibromyalgia. It is the latest example of the increasing promise the martial art is managing the symptoms of hard-to-treat health conditions, which modern day medicines can't cure.
So what is Tai Chi you may ask? Well it is not just a series of agonizingly slow, calculated movements if you were thinking that. Tai Chi is sometimes translated as "The ultimate." It's origin is in China and it is actually a complex combination of theory and practice, based on five elements. Different schools of Tai Chi have developed and evolved making certain varieties of Tai Chi popular among seniors and those with chronic health problems. A study by Tufts University put 66 patients with fibromyalgia-which is a condition where patients suffer from stiffness, chronic pain, sleeping difficulty and mental health symptoms-put them into two groups and made one group partake in classes of Tai Chi two days a week. The other group just did simple stretching exercises.Over 12 weeks, those doing Tai Chi reported significant improvements in pain levels and psychological wellness.
Small studies have shown positive results for patients afflicted with other chronic conditions, including Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis. And because tai chi emphasizes strength and balance, it can help the elderly or those recovering from a stroke become limber.
The way this is related to biology is that it talks about how many people are affected by fibromyalgia and that usually this condition cannot be cured. But with simple exercises such as Tai Chi can help them ease the pain. This is also important because a lot of people have this condition and it could be a relative so Tai Chi can help your family feel better.
