Scientists Discover Pea-Sized Frog in Borneo

Scientists in Bornea have discovered a new species of frogs. This pea sized frog called the Microhyla Nepenthicola may be the smallest amphibian alive. It measures between 10.6 and 12.8 millimeters. Scientists say that this is a big scientific discovery despite its small size. One scientist states that “their size is very interesting from an evolutionary point of view…what allows these frogs to do is exploit new habitats.” Since the frogs are so tiny, they live inside a pitcher plant.

This topic relates to science and biology through ecology. Since a new species has been discovered, it may disturb the food chain and the ecosystems of other animals. Though it may disturb the systems, it may also benefit since a new food is being added to the food chain.

We should care about this topic because since the species is new, we do not know much about it so it may be a threat to any ecosystem. It could potentially be an invasive species and destroy other species so a close eye should be kept on these frogs until we know more about them.
