ICE on the loose !

A gigantic ice chunk has broken off of Greenland's Petermann glacier which scientists say could possibly be ''the biggest glacier collapse in recorded history''. Because of the collapse, the Petermann glacier lost about a quarter of its 43-mile long ice shelf. This glacier has been slowly falling apart, like many other glaciers, for years. Although the breakup of the ice is a natural occurance, the sheer massive size of the chunk is very unusual.

This article relates to biology because it has to do with the environment. The coastal glaciers are speeding up as they drift out to the sea in many places which is vital to look into because it could be an indicator of something big happening. Ofcourse the ice chunk can also affect the environment directly in negative ways.

We should care because if the glaciers keep breaking off in chunks like this, it could possibly cause a lot of destruction if it drifts off to mainland where humans live. Also, if they continue to melt quickly, we could have floods because the ice would melt down into water and overflow onto mainland causing another multitude of problems for humans.
