Remember the older article I wrote about; how high heels can be bad for your feet? Well now some doctors say that flip-flops can be bad for your feet too. They are easy and convenient to wear but how bad can they be for your feet's health. Flip-flops come in all different kinds of colors and go with everything but would you rather suffer from pain in your feet, ankles, and legs or wear something more comfortable and better for your feet like sneakers?
This relates to science and biology because of well your feet. Doctors say that if you wear flip-flops all the time they can be bad because they are bad for the arches in your feet, they don't have any support, and they don't' really protect your feet. Podiatrists, which is a foot doctor, say that people who have flat feet or other foot issues should wear something that supports their feet. A study in 2008 at Auburn University found that people who wore thong styled flip-flops had pains in their ankles, legs, and feet. They also found that people who wore flip-flops took shorter steps and their heels touched the ground with less of a vertical step than those who wore athletic sneakers. The flip flops caused people to not bring their toes up as much which caused them to walk in a shorter stride and a weird ankle angle. This most likely happens because people like to hold on to their flip flops when they walk with their toes.
This is important because it affects you. Most people wear flip-flops all the time in the summer or even year round but now if we know what they could be doing to our feet than we can learn to wear them less often. So next time you put your cute flip flops you might want to think twice and change them to sneakers for the sake of your feet!
