A new type of cholorophyll has been discovered on some stromatolites. unlike other organisms that photosynthesize this new one can use the light just beyond the red of the light spectrum. this allows it to be very effecient with its photosynthesis. the chlorophyll has been named chlorophyll "f" which follows the other cholorophyll's a, b, c, and d. this is the first discovery of a new type of chlorophyll in 60 years.
There are 4 common types of chlorophyll, each absorbs a different wavelength of light. chlorophyll a is the most common, it absorbs blue light at about 465 nanometers and red light at about 665 nanometers. chlorophyll b and c is a little less common, it absorbs light similar to what chlorphyll a does but shifted a little. chlorophyll d found in some bacteria abosrbs light at about 697 nanometers, which is a bit less effiecient then chlorophyll f. chlorophyll f absorbs light at about 706 nanometers, the more nanometers the more efficient the plant is at absorbing light.
This discovery could lead to many breakthroughs in biofeul technology. biofuel is feul made of various forms of biomass. since chlorophyll f is so efficient then scientists can engineer algae that are more efficient producers of oil for biofeul. biofeul is one of the ideas for green energy, next to hydrogen feul and electric cars. green energy is the new big thing in science, since the world is in such high demand of everything being Earthy-friendly this new discovery will mean a lot in days to come.
