Fish farming has became more and more dangerous. I do not mean for us humans, but for the fish. Every year, we humans produce about 110 million tons of fishes and it only goes up. Every year, it goes up about 8 percent but with this growing amount of fishes, also comes a growing amount of disease. These disease does not only threaten the fishes that are kept in farms but also wild fishes.
The first HSMI (heart and skeletal muscle inflammation) was found in a farm in Norway in 1990. The fish that it was discovered on was a salmon. This type of disease destroyed the heart and muscle tissues of the fish. Scientist now are trying to find out exactly what was going on. They found a virus similar to this disease that are double-stranded RNA that affects the vertebrates. Scientist ran a series of experiments and tested found out that this disease is indeed affecting wild salmons that are living in the coastal rivers of Norway. Scientist are still running testes and are trying to develop a vaccine.
This is important because if you eat one of these fishes, no one will really know what might happen to you. You might die just like the fish itself. You might have your heart and muscle tissues destroyed. Since the scientists are still trying to find a vaccine, you might not be saved so it's very important to know that there are deadly fish diseases.
