Through the studies of the brain and mutations, UCLA researchers had find out ways how NF1 (neurofibromin), a disorder or mutation in the gene, disrupt working memory in the brain. This was tested on mice and Dr. Alcino Silva concluded that NF1 control the GABA, neurotransmitter which regulates brain cells activities. Altering communications between brain cells are caused by too much of the GABA being released. GABE also interrupted the activity of the neurons in the brain, which allows the activities in the cells to slow down. This disruption in the brain activity is interfering with the working memory. Besides testing on mice, they asked patients with NF1 to perform memory task with fMRI scan, which measures blood and oxygen that flows to various area of the brain. More blood and oxygen flows into the brain indicated more brain movements. Compared NF1 patients to healthy patients, NF1 patients show less activity in the brain. Their brains activate fewer motions, which can also means that their brains are the worse to perform tasks.
The brain is one of the major organs in the body that is necessary to keep in good condition and stay in good health. Brain controls body movements and regulates all the things in the body. If the brain is damage or being disrupted, this can cause major issue, such as, activity being interrupted in the brain. NF1 or neurofibromin, a disorder in the gene, can have a great impact on the brain, like disrupting the memory. Also, this causes the brain to be unhealthy and function less accurately.
We should care because there are people with NF1 or with brain diseases. This can cause them to go insane or memory loss. This can also inform us about NF1 disorder and how GABA works and functions. Scientists are trying to experience how NF1 works and the cause and effect of it. We should care because this disorder can happen to anyone and should be aware of it.
