One of Europe’s largest berry banks may soon be turned over into land for new houses. This berry bank houses more than five thousand species of crop that are difficult to cultivate. These species of fruits and rare berries can’t be stored frozen as other fruits can, which makes it impossible to move to another piece of land. The Russian Housing Development Foundation (RHDF) is trying to take over the seventy hectares of land, because it’s not used to make profit.
If the RHDF wins this battle and destroys the land to build houses five thousand species of fruits can face extinction. This can drastically impact the ecosystem. These rare fruits and berries may be the source of food supply for some animal species. If these animal species don’t get the sufficient food supplies they need they can begin to die off. By removing these crops many repercussions will begin to follow that decision.
Not only is removing the land for housing jeopardizing hundreds of organisms food supply, it is economically incorrect. According to the RHDF the land isn’t being used for profitable resources, but this is untrue. Russia is one of the world’s leading producers of black currents, which contributes to the countries yearly profit of 430 million dollars. 430 million dollars isn’t profitable? With the world’s economy slowly declining I think 430 million dollars is doing reasonably well for the country’s economy.
