Would controlling the nature benefit humankind?

The Associated Press (AP) discusses the news and path of the hurricane Earl. AP says that Earl is heading toward New England where many businesses are closing and people are confused. Many flights are cancelled. This means that businesses are losing money and the economy is affected.
All eyes are focused on Earl. The Atlantic Ocean is located between two continents and is always sending strong winds that sometimes turn into hurricane or tornado. Since Earl has to do with temperature, climate, this article is related to science. Also, the winds might affect the ecosystem of the coast. So, this article deals with ecology and geography.
This concerns me because I live in Boston. Since Earl might affect Boston, I have to be aware of things that affect Boston. Also, Earl affects the attitude of people. People around me are a little be worried of the outcome of the hurricane because some of them have never witnessed strong wind prior to this one. In addition, I would like to understand the relationship between economy and science. If we, humans, were able to block and avoid them, we would be better off and we would not know losses in both lives and materials. So, I believe that if we were able to control the weather, we would be able to reach Mars and improve our economy.
