Predicting Tsunami Waves

Researchers at Institute of Geophysics of Paris are working on a study that proposed a GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite that will be able to predict tsunamis, which occurs when rock and water interact violently. this GPS satellite will be able to pick up patterns of electrons and charged particles in the atmosphere from internal gravity waves produced by tsunamis. Tsunamis can be detected a few hours before it happens by the distinguished gravity waves it sends off into the ionosphere. Other than the GPS satellite, other warning systems for tsunamis include mid-ocean buoys, sea floor pressure gauges, and land-based measurements of seismic activity. With all these warning systems, tsunamis can be more easily predicted, saving thousands of lives.

This article relates to science concepts, because a research group is working on improving technology tools that will help detect tsunami waves better in order to prevent as many people from getting injured from this natural disaster as possible.

We should care because tsunamis can and have taken place in many parts of the world, and who knows if someone we care for might be one of the victims of this natural disaster? This research will improve technology that if somehow, a violent tsunami is detected, warnings will be sent out and many lives could be saved from danger.
