McMinnville High School in Oregon, had 19 football players sent to the emergency room after students reported intense pain. Doctors don't understand how this happened but has theories of how. Blood tests were performed on students who didn't have compartment syndrome, a rare soft tissue condition that was found in 3 of the students.
All nineteen students had elevated levels of an enzyme called creatine kinase. The elevated levels of CK can cause kidney failure. The cause of the unusual levels of CK is currently unknown to the doctors although there are possible causes, such as protein pills. The coach had told doctors that the team had practice during a sunny afternoon when it was nearly 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Though it was not believed to be the root of the problem. The players also may have taken protein pills but the students denied that claim.
Although the students' lives weren't in any danger, we must not forget that we have to practice caution when taking in vitamin pills. There is such thing as too much of a good thing. The human body isn't as sensitive as some make it to be. Our bodies itself can survive days without water and food. But never the less we should still be cautious when taking vitamin pills at such a young age.
We are at an age where we could take in pills and go through the day without eating anything at all. But that has a harmful effect to the human body when all we ever eat are pills. Our bodies will treat food as poisonous and will not allow us to swallow food. Also taking in protein pills will cause the natural functions of the body to create protein from amino acids from meat and beans. The inability to create protein will cause injuries to last longer than necessary.
Having too much of a good thing can cause horrible side effects, and too little can cause serious side effects as well. Eating right can always prevent things like this from happening and students should be careful about taking supplements for sports. If it is recommended by a doctor then it should be alright. Our bodies are still growing and having things like this happen is something not to be taken light of.
