Feeling Pain ? How about Snail Venom?

Researchers have developed a venom based medication that can be taken orally in which it helps resolve chronic pain. Simple, you may say ? The controversy is not the pill, but what the pill is made from- snail venom. Scientist say that although the Cone Snail uses its venom to paralyze passing fish and its prey, there are chemicals in the venom that can restrict the pain signals in the brain. The article states that the venom has powerful effects on the nervous system, which could possibly weaken the pain of cancer, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, AIDS/HIV, or simpler pains from even car accidents.

The drug blocks signals in the brain that make the body feel pain and that fact has much to do with biology. The drug specifically blocks the calcium channels in the nerve cells that convey pain signals. Scientists have analyzed the compounds in the venom and have found proteins called peptides. These peptides work as a modern day anesthetic.

When, not if, this drug is passed this will be a big breakthrough in medicine. The fact that this drug would be 100x more powerful than morphine and more importantly, there would be no risk of addiction, makes this topic even more unbelievable. People need to know about this new discovery that can alter so many lives. Also, the drug abstracted from the venom are completely from a natural place- mother earth !
