Recent studies have involved the topic on wither or not REM sleep can in fact make a human smarter. Several descriptive trials of an experiment took place where they monitored human participants. Some participants experienced REM sleep, in which dreams become most visual, another group experienced REM-less naps and the third group of participants sat quietly without taking a nap. When woken they were all asked to complete a few word problems similar to those on the SAT questionnaires. The percentage increase of correct answers were greater among the participants who were involved in REM sleep, while those who took a normal nap or no nap at all had no improvement on answering the questions. Thus, proving that REM sleep allows individuals to work better on creativity-oriented word problems than of those with normal naps.
Researchers believe that REM sleep is the cause for humans having the ability to see into the future (commonly known as having a déjà vu). From what researchers have found, REM sleep can help improve connections among unrelated things, referring back to how we are capable to “seeing into the future”. Dreams are only past event experiences involving you, merged into one.
Being able to know and understand how our body works is something important for all humans. The brain is a complex organ that is held responsible for several day to day functions, including sleep. Having the knowledge of knowing what type of sleep betters you for various questions is extremely useful. Also, by us scholars being involved in school this possible fact can be quite helpful to us for improving our test taking strategies.
