Diabetes for non-breastfeeding moms?

Studies show that mothers who do not breastfeed their children have a higher chance of developing type 2 diabetes in the future. This was brought up by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh. It's been said that scientists "have seen dramatic increases in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes over the last century." In addition, Eleanor Bimla Schwarz, M.D, M.S, included to her statement by suggesting that "Diet and exercise are widely known to impact the risk of type 2 diabetes, but few people realize that breastfeeding also reduces mothers' risk of developing the disease later in life by decreasing maternal belly fat." To test this study, 2,233 women between the ages of 40 and 78 were used. 56 percent of those women reported that they had breastfed a newborn for at least one month. Another 27 percent who reported that they had not breastfed were found to have developed type 2 diabetes and were actually more likely to develop the disease instead of women who did breastfeed or had never given birth at all. Dr. Schwarz also included, "Our study provides another good reason to encourage women to breastfeed their infants, at least for the infant's first month of life."

This topic relates to science and biology because it affects natural instincts on life. It describes certain affects and a different cause to a very serious disease. Basically, science and biology are helping to inform us in order to keep us healthier, or in this case, mothers healthier.

This article could relate to those who are close to us because it provides a health warning for this specific topic that can either affect us in the future or present to whoever we may know. So what? We certainly want mothers to be healthy and strong in order to take care of their babies, this article allows them to get a better understanding of how important breastfeeding is and how serious the alternate solution could get.
