Ebola, cholera, malaria, tuberculosis are just some of the diseases that can be life threatening in most third world countries because resources are limited many people end up dying. Just recently health authorities has issued a warning in Nigeria because there is a cholera threat. About 352 people have died due to this infection. Cholera is a water borne disease and it causes diarrhea and dehydration and in some cases can be fatal. The bad thing about this disease is that it is very contagious. BBC 's reporter Caroline Duffard explains how Nigeria is very poor and that many of the people living there do not have access to clean water, or toilets and open sewers can overflow.
This relates to biology concepts because it involves a type bacteria of the small intestines that causes the watery diarrhea. It is caused by the bacterium vibrio cholera.
It is important to know what is going on around the world, and we all are aware that infectious diseases due to lack of hygiene and low medical care is very common among poor countries. However that doesn't mean well developed countries cannot get this infection as well. It is important we keep proper hygiene, and get vaccinated to keep ourselves safe from these virulent infections.
