At some point in everyone's lives, there must be at least once when we were tired from a lack of night's sleep, or slept in till noon. Despite a recommended 8-9 hours of sleep for the youth (teenagers), this fact doesn't apply to adults. Researchers conducted a survey at West Virginia University about sleeping, and they have discovered that adults should have 7 hours of sleep. Research shows that any less or more than 7 hours in sleeping hours would lead to an increase in health risks. Participants in this study sleeping 9 or more hours a day had a 1.5x higher risk of developing a cardiovascular disease. Women getting 5 or fewer hours of sleep a day had a 2.5x higher risk of developing a cardiovascular disease. Adults age 60 and under getting 5 or fewer hours of sleep a day had the highest risk at 3x as likely to develop a cardiovascular disease! These results didn't show any connection with any other health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure and depression.
The amount of sleeping hours we get relates to biology concepts, because this number, whether high or low, can have such a great effect on human health. The articles explains the increased risks from sleeping both too much or too little.
We should all care about the hours of sleep we get, because our everyday life, and even our life, can be impacted by just these hours of sleep. When we don't sleep enough, we have more trouble paying attention and slower reflexes, and even too much sleep has a great impact on our future lifestyle too. It is important that we be able to get the recommended amount of sleep to live a healthier lifestyle.
